We changed our Articles so we could embed the values of the organisation in its governance. This has helped us steer decision-making in the business, including turning down work that doesn’t fit with our values, whilst remaining profitable. It’s the main document that guides our decision-making, including setting strategic direction and the kinds of organisations we decide to work with and the kind of projects we decide to work on.
We find it helps us be competitive in a difficult market. We find ourselves having to compete against people who volunteer directly for charities as well as agencies that offer web/app development on a pro bono basis. Organisations who have chosen to work with us have said we “get” them because of our own values and ethics. We understand the sector because we’re of the sector.
We find the charitable aims in our Articles help attract talent to work for the business too. We’re a young workplace and we find many millennials want to work in a job where they can apply their skills for a purpose. For example, in a previous job, one of our former employees worked to optimise buttons in betting apps in order to encourage people to spend more money. When he came to us, he applied his knowledge and experience to working with credit unions and gambling addiction charities instead.
